Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera plant is believed by many to be one of nature's most incredible byproducts.  It has been used for many years around the house to treat cuts and burns, and has been incorporated into countless of commercial products such as lip-balm, shampoo, and sunscreen/sunburn lotions.  However, there exists a concentrated powdered extract from aloe called aloe mucilaginous polysaccharide. It is used to treat auto-immune disorders and diseases.   Particularly those in the digestive tract.
Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharides can be used to help treat diverticulitis.  Aloe mucilaginous polysaccharides are long-chain sugar molecules composed of individual mannose and glucose sugar molecules connected together — which have been attributed to subduing and reducing symptoms associated with UC.

The AMP molecule is extracted from the aloe plant in a controlled environment.  To get the highest refinement of AMP, lyophilization must be used to preserve the varying sizes of molecules that contain these potent healing properties.  Unfortunately, there are few manufacturers that offer the freeze-dried extracted form of AMP as it is expensive to manufacture.   To learn more about lyophilization, read this article:
Processing of Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharides
SEROVERA® AMP 500 is currently the only vendor of freeze-dried AMP.

Points to Remember

  • Diverticulosis occurs when small pouches, called diverticula, bulge outward through weak spots in the colon (large intestine).
  • The pouches form when pressure inside the colon builds, usually because of constipation.
  • Most people with diverticulosis never have any discomfort or symptoms.
  • The most likely cause of diverticulosis is a low-fiber diet because it increases constipation and pressure inside the colon.
  • For most people with diverticulosis, eating a high-fiber diet is the only treatment needed.
  • You can increase your fiber intake by eating these foods: whole grain breads and cereals; fruit like apples and peaches; vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, spinach, carrots, asparagus, and squash; and starchy vegetables like kidney beans and lima beans.
  • Diverticulitis occurs when the pouches become infected or inflamed and cause pain and tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen.

Tips to prevent Diverticulitis

  1. Tips to help prevent Diverticulitis the Natural way!
  • Eat fiber-rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grain breads and cereals to relieve constipation
  • Drink at eight glasses of water daily to cleanse the body and keep the digestive system moving
  • Exercise regularly because the more active you become, the less likely you are to develop diverticulitis
  • Avoid delaying bowel movements rather respond quickly to avoid increased pressure in the colon
  • Reduce your intake of red meat and instead substitute it with chicken or fish
  • Add a fiber supplement such as psyllium seed bulking agents to your diet
  • Cleanse your colon to help prevent toxic buildup by using herbal cleanses
  • Avoid using laxatives, enemas and narcotic medications that can cause constipation
  • Learn to enjoy meals more by sitting down to eat, eating slower and paying attention to your food.

The Miracle of Fish Oil

In June 2012, my husband went 3 years without an attack of diverticulitis. This is nothing short of a miracle.

In June and July of 2010 he became very ill not only with his severe diverticulitis ( he was classified in the worst 5% and was facing surgery to remove a significant section of his bowel) but he got a form of colitis caused by over use of antibiotics for which he had to be hospitalised. Colitis is a terribly debilitating condition also.

After ruling out cancer one more time in the June he was booked in by the top specialist for surgery to remove many inches of his bowel (possibly feet). It took seven years for him to agree to this surgery which had been offered to him seven years earlier when his first attack of diverticulitis came with peritonitis due to the bowel and the bladder coming into contact with each other in his abdominal cavity. Not a good scenario at all.

He tried natural remedies for seven years but always had to resort to strong antibiotics. he tried Aloe Vera juice, diet, Fish Oil and Olive Leaf extract and they all helped somewhat but the attacks came every three months and significantly interfered with his ability to work and socialise. We moved across a couple of states and all new specialists said the same thing - surgery to remove a section of the bowel.

My husband is very determined (stubborn) though.

He made one last Internet search for the latest research on diverticulitis and found reference to some research that recommended Fish Oil but in mega doses much more than what is recommended on the side of the bottles.

he started straight away on this and our miracle happened. This worked within 5 days. My husband rang up and cancelled his surgery one week before he was due.

A month later he told his specialist who was somewhat sceptical but did not argue as he liked my husband.

Initially we celebrated every month that ticked by without an attack. We count our blessings. We even forget now how long it is.

But 3 months ago we celebrated 3 full years of healthy living all because of Fish Oil providing the turning point.

My husband lives a healthy lifestyle also and makes a lot of effort to protect his health with fibre daily, exercise, limited alcohol and healthy eating.

What to Eat with an Attack?

If infection has already occurred it is recommended that a person stick to a low residue diet which will have an effect where the bowel movements will decrease and the infection or inflammation of the diverticula can have a chance to heal.

A low residue diet is one that consists of a daily intake of no more than 10 grams of fiber. While on this diet for an extended period of time it is recommended that a multi-vitamin or mineral supplement be taken daily. This ensures that minerals and vitamins lost while on the low residue diet are made by taking supplements.

Grain products to be eaten while on the low residue diet include:

  • refined white bread, buns and english muffins

  • cereals including: cornflakes, rice bubbles, special K and cheerios

  • biscuits including: arrowroot biscuits and water crackers

  • white rice, refined pasta and noodles

  • any fruit and vegetable juice excluding prune juice

  • stone fruits, melons, grapes and canned fruit salad

  • potatoes with no skin, alfalfa sprouts, beetroot, green beans, carrots, celery, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, mushrooms, capsicum, squash and zucchini

  • well cooked meat fish and eggs can all be eaten too

AVOID:

  • whole grains

  • raw and dried fruits, sultanas, raisins, berries

  • broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage

  • all nuts and seeds

Good Luck

Seeds and Diverticulitis

Until recently, many doctors suggested avoiding foods with small seeds such as tomatoes or strawberries because they believed that particles could lodge in the diverticula and cause inflammation. However, it is now generally accepted that only foods that may irritate or get caught in the diverticula cause problems. Foods such as nuts, popcorn hulls, and sunflower, pumpkin, caraway, and sesame seeds should be avoided. The seeds in tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries, and raspberries, as well as poppy seeds, are generally considered harmless. People differ in the amounts and types of foods they can eat. Decisions about diet should be made based on what works best for each person. Keeping a food diary may help identify individual items in one's diet.

Good Luck

Diverticulitis Symptom

The most common symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain. The most common sign is tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen. If infection is the cause, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping, and constipation may occur as well. The severity of symptoms depends on the extent of the infection and complications.

Benefits of Fish Oil for Fitness and Health

Benefits of Fish Oil for Fitness and Health

When the words oils and fats are mentioned, health-conscious individuals tend to run for cover. What they fail to realize is that there are good fats and bad fats. Complete avoidance of intake of oils and fats would actually be detrimental – rather than beneficial – to their health.

The Truth about Fish Oil

Essential fatty acids must always be part of our daily diet – without them, we take one step closer to our deaths. Essential fatty acids are divided into two families: omega-6 EFAs and omega-3 EFAS.

Although there are only very slight differences to distinguish the two groups of essential fatty acids from each other, studies have revealed that too much intake of omega-6 EFAs can lead to inflammation, blood clotting and tumor growth. The good news, however, is that the opposite is true for omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.

Omega-6 vs. Omega-3

Physicians and scientists are of the same opinion that the cause behind increasing cases of heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, premature aging and certain kinds of cancer is none other than an imbalanced intake of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.

As mentioned earlier on, omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils. This includes but is not limited to corn oil and soy oil, both of which contains high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs on the other hand can be found also in marine plankton and walnut and flaxseed oils. It should be significant to take note that fatty fish and fish oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that have been observed to provide many benefits to the human body. In the early 1970’s, a study on Greenland Eskimos have revealed that one of the major reasons why they rarely suffer from heart diseases is because of their high-fat diet (mainly composed of fish).

The two essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are also helpful in preventing atherosclerosis, heart attacks, depression and various forms of cancer. Fish oil supplemented food have also proven to be useful in treating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Other Benefits of Fish Oil

There are a lot more illnesses and situations in which intake of fish oil has proven to be significantly beneficial.

Making the Heart Healthier
The heart is inarguably one of the most important parts of our body and having an unhealthy heart means having to suffer a rather limited lifespan. Naturally, it’s in our best interests to keep our hearts happy and healthy and one way of doing that is eating food that contains fish oil.

In Athens, Greece, for instance, a study was made to show if there was a direct relationship between high fish diet and inflammation of blood vessels. The results revealed that those who ate more fish than the others had a lower level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, factors that are commonly used to measure likelihood of blood vessel inflammation. These benefits remained even when the various risks associated with high fish diet were taken into account.

Fish to Become Thin

In Perth, Australia, a study had revealed that fish consumption can be used against hypertension and obesity. Researchers of the UWA (University of Western Australia) have discovered that a weight-loss diet which includes a regular amount of fish consumption can be quite effective in reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance.

Fish Oil to Combat Asthma

People suffering from respiratory problems like asthma tend to be perceived as unfit and unhealthy. They should now be pleased to learn that certain studies have revealed the benefits of fish oil for asthma-burdened-individuals. Statistics show that approximately 20 to 25% of children today suffer one form of asthma or another at a certain point in their lives. And certain evidence reveals a regular diet of food with high linoleic acid content as the reason behind it.

Researchers of UW (University of Wyoming) conducted a study by subjecting a number of children to a high-fish diet while others continued with their regular diet. Results revealed that the participants who ate more fish were less prone to asthma attacks and were able to breathe more easily as well.

Consult Your Nutritionist Now

Nothing is good when consumed or used excessively but complete avoidance of a particular food type is equally harmful as well. Ask your nutritionist for the right amount of fish intake for your age and health status.
